Planet Mermaid supports International Day of the Girl
What is the International Day of the Girl?
International Day of the Girl is an annual initiative launched in 2012 to celebrate the United Nations recognition of girl’s rights. It has been incorporated to increase the world’s awareness of gender equality, child poverty and the hardship girls face as a result of the humanitarian crisis.
Why was it created?
Worldwide there are over 1.1 billion young girls who face day to day challenges no one should experience such as child marriage, poverty, child labour, female genital mutilation and adolescent pregnancies. These utterly disturbing statistics take away their rights to be children forcing them to mature way before their time.
Some astonishingly upsetting statistics:
650 million girls and women around the world were married as children
200 million girls and women have undergone FGM
21 million girls aged between 15 and 19 will become pregnant in developing regions
64 million girls are working instead of learning
500 million women around the world are illiterate
