By the Founder of Planet Mermaid There is something timeless about the magic of mermaids. For centuries, stories of mysterious sea maidens have captured the imagination of children and adults alike. In the United Kingdom especially, the mythology of mermaids runs deep through coastal folklore, maritime legends, and seaside storytelling. Yet over the past two decades, something extraordinary happened: the mermaid myth stepped out of the pages of legend and into real life. Children didn’t just dream of mermaids anymore — they became them. At Planet Mermaid, we were lucky enough to witness the very beginning of this transformation. The Early Days of Mermaid Swimming Back in 2009, when Planet Mermaid first began creating mermaid tails in our studio in Bedfordshire, the idea of mermaid swimming was still something new in the UK. Children loved dressing up as mermaids, but swimming like one — gliding through the water with a beautiful tail — was almost unheard of. Our very first tails were pink. That colour felt like the perfect beginning — playful, magical, and unmistakably mermaid. When the Beach Believed Parents began calling us to tell incredible stories about children wearing our tails at the beach. One young girl swimming with her tail quickly became the centre of attention as other children gathered around her asking for photos and hugs. The Birth of Mermaid Swimming Lessons Parents began asking if their children could learn to swim like mermaids properly. So we began working with affiliated swim schools across the UK to create structured mermaid swimming sessions where children could learn the dolphin kick and gain confidence in the water. We have training hundreds of professional Swimming Instructors across the UK to date. The evolution of mermaid swim schools has evolved over the last two decades Listening to Our Mermaid Community We listened carefully to our customers and expanded from our original pink tail into a full rainbow of colours so every young mermaid could find the tail that matched their imagination. When Parents Wanted to Be Mermaids Too Mothers often told us they wished they had mermaid tails when they were young. So we began designing tails for adults as well, allowing families to enjoy the magic of mermaid swimming together. When Mermaids Became Gymnasts In 2018 we experimented with mermaid gymnastics at a local gym school. The BBC filmed the session and the footage quickly went viral with more than 7 million people watching mermaids performing gymnastics. Shortly afterwards the Olympic gymnastics training team in the United States contacted us asking if we could send mermaid tails for their athletes to try. We worked closely with the Falcon Gym Team and created a Viral sensation! 7M viewers BBC Business News and Global Attention Following the viral success we were invited onto BBC Business News to talk about the global interest in mermaid gymnastics and mermaid swimming. During the broadcast the presenter even wore one of our mermaid tails on air. Dressing Celebrities and Their Families Over the years our mermaid tails have been worn by thousands of children including the families of well‑known celebrities. One unforgettable moment was seeing Shakira wearing one of our mermaid tails in the Vogue building in London. Sending Mermaid Magic Around the World Planet Mermaid tails have travelled across the globe, helping children experience the joy of becoming a mermaid for the very first time. Guinness World Record for the Largest Gathering of Mermaids In June 2022, Planet Mermaid was proud to take part in the Guinness World Record attempt for the largest gathering of mermaids, held in Plymouth, United Kingdom. An incredible 378 mermaids came together in one location, creating a spectacular celebration of creativity, community, and the growing popularity of mermaid swimming. Events like this highlight how a childhood dream has evolved into a global movement enjoyed by swimmers of all ages. Later that year the record was surpassed by Richard Branson at the Virgin Voyages Beach Club in Bimini, where 457 mermaids gathered to set a new Guinness World Record. Seeing hundreds of people united by the magic of mermaids was a powerful reminder of how far the mermaid swimming community has grown around the world. The History of Mermaid Swimming Although mermaid legends date back centuries in folklore, modern mermaid swimming is a relatively recent activity. Early underwater mermaid performances appeared in films and aquariums during the mid‑20th century. As swim technology improved, specially designed monofins allowed swimmers to move through the water using the dolphin kick, creating the fluid movement associated with mermaids. During the early 2000s recreational mermaid swimming began to grow around the world, and companies such as Planet Mermaid helped introduce the experience to families and swim schools across the UK. What Is Mermaid Swimming? Mermaid swimming involves wearing a mermaid tail with a monofin and using a dolphin kick motion similar to the butterfly stroke. Is Mermaid Swimming Safe? Saber maisMermaid tails are more than just a fun accessory. They are a significant investment for anyone who enjoys swimming like a mermaid. Proper care is essential to keep your tail looking beautiful, lasting longer, and performing safely in the water. This guide will provide clear cleaning and storage tips, helping you maintain your mermaid tail while ensuring its durability. Why Proper Mermaid Tail Care Matters Caring for your mermaid tail is important for several reasons: Longevity: Regular cleaning prevents fabric degradation and keeps colours vibrant. Hygiene: Mermaid tails come in contact with water, sweat, and chlorine, making proper cleaning essential to prevent bacteria or mildew. Safety: Damaged tails can be unsafe to swim in, especially if the monofin becomes loose or the fabric tears. By following a consistent care routine, you ensure your tail remains safe, hygienic, and visually stunning. Cleaning Your Mermaid Tail Cleaning your mermaid tail properly is the first step to long-lasting enjoyment. Different types of tails require slightly different care, so it is important to follow manufacturer instructions. 1. Rinse After Every Use After swimming in chlorinated pools, saltwater, or lakes, rinse your mermaid tail thoroughly with cold, fresh water. This helps remove chlorine, salt, and debris that can damage the fabric and fade the colours. Tip: Avoid using hot water because it may warp the monofin or weaken the tail fabric. 2. Hand Wash with Mild Detergent For deeper cleaning, fill a basin with cold water and a small amount of mild detergent or swimsuit cleaner. Gently swirl the tail in the water without scrubbing harshly. Avoid: Machine washing or using harsh chemicals, bleach, or fabric softeners as these can damage the tail. 3. Rinse Thoroughly After washing, rinse the tail multiple times in cold water to remove all soap residues. Leftover detergent can cause fabric stiffening or irritation on the skin. 4. Dry Properly Gently squeeze out excess water without wringing or twisting the tail. Lay it flat on a clean towel or hang it in a shaded area to air dry. Avoid: Direct sunlight or tumble drying because UV rays can fade colours and heat can damage the monofin. Storing Your Mermaid Tail Proper storage is just as important as cleaning. Correct storage prevents creasing, stretching, and mildew growth. 1. Ensure the Tail is Completely Dry Never store a damp tail. Moisture can cause mildew or unpleasant odors that are difficult to remove. Always ensure the tail is completely dry before putting it away. 2. Use a Tail Bag or Soft Storage Option Invest in a breathable tail bag or a soft storage container to protect your tail from dust and sharp objects. Avoid plastic bags that trap moisture. 3. Avoid Folding the Monofin If your tail has a removable monofin, store it separately or in a way that avoids bending. Twisting or folding the monofin can cause permanent damage. Water safety instructors also recommend inspecting monofins regularly to ensure they remain secure and undamaged before swimming. 4. Store Flat or Rolled If possible, store your tail flat or gently rolled. Rolling reduces creases and helps maintain the shape of the tail. 5. Keep in a Cool, Dry Place Avoid storing your tail in direct sunlight, damp areas, or near heat sources. A cool, dry cupboard or shelf is ideal for long-term storage. Additional Tips for Mermaid Tail Maintenance Maintaining your tail goes beyond cleaning and storage. Here are extra tips to extend its lifespan: Avoid Rough Surfaces: Do not drag your tail across rough pool edges, rocks, or concrete because this can cause snags or tears. Check the Monofin Regularly: Inspect for cracks or loose parts. A damaged monofin can affect swimming performance and safety. Rotate Tails: If you swim frequently, consider owning more than one tail to reduce wear and tear on a single tail. Avoid Prolonged Sun Exposure: Even when dry, excessive sunlight can fade the fabric over time. Choosing the Right Detergent and Accessories Not all detergents are suitable for mermaid tails. Look for mild, non-abrasive detergents specifically designed for swimwear. Avoid laundry powders or harsh chemical cleaners. Accessories like tail hangers or padded storage bags can also help maintain the tail’s shape while preventing damage from folding or creasing. Signs Your Mermaid Tail Needs Extra Care Watch for signs of wear that require immediate attention: Fading colours or fabric pilling Tears or holes in the fabric Loose or cracked monofin Persistent odours after washing Addressing these issues promptly can prevent further damage and keep your tail in top condition. Conclusion Planet Mermaid has worked with mermaid tails and swim schools for many years, and proper cleaning and storage is one of the most important factors in extending the life of a tail. Proper care of your mermaid tail ensures it stays beautiful, hygienic, and safe for swimming. By following these cleaning and storage tips, you can enjoy your tail for years to come. Regular rinsing, gentle washing, careful drying, and mindful storage are all key practices. Treat your mermaid tail with care, and it will reward you with many magical swimming experiences. Shop Now!
