The New “The Little Mermaid” Film is coming to our screens!

The New “The Little Mermaid” Film is coming to our screens!

There has been massive excitement recently with news that filming has now finished for the new “The Little Mermaid” Disney film, although the release date is set for May 26 2023 fans are already super excited and are counting down the days..months..years until it comes out in the cinema. All the team at Planet Mermaid cannot wait and have been debating as to which Planet Mermaid inspired tail would look the best on the gorgeously talented Halle Bailey who has been cast as Ariel little mermaid.   Past castings has seen Ariel little mermaid in green and purple, similar to our very own Sea Star or Purple Surf collection  Or will they completely change and maybe go for a Sunset Splash style? This tone would look amazing on Halle Bailey really showing off her amazing colour!  What do you think Halle should wear; we would love to hear from you on our socials! Next let’s talk material; will it be an inexpensive silicone mermaid tail to go with a silicone monofin? Or will it be a custom silicone mermaid tail or something completely different such as a neoprene mermaid tail?! Planet Mermaid would also love to see Halle in its very own Magic Fin Monofin  with three colours available to choose from.  Halle would have no problem in choosing which one to go with her mermaid tail! The choices are just endless and we cannot wait to see what the end result will look like. It has not been plain sailing for Halle Bailey, who at only 19 was hit with criticism soon after she was announced by Disney that she would be Ariel in the live action production of the animated classic, “The Little Mermaid”.  Twitter and other social media channels were inundated with an online petition #NotMyAriel which saw opinionated and cartoon purists complain that she did not look like the original version of princess Ariel mermaid who was white and a redhead in the 1989 version of the film.  Halle however came back in true mermaid style commented: “"I just feel like this role was something bigger than me and greater. I feel like I'm dreaming and I'm just grateful and I don't pay attention to the negativity. It's going to be beautiful and I'm just so excited to be a part of it." Source: BBC Newsbeat Such inspiring words from such a young actress! Planet Mermaid applauds you for your courage, professionalism and ultimate girl power! Disney also hit back defending Halle by pointing out that the original “The Little Mermaid” story was created  in 1837 by the famous Danish author Hans Christian Anderson, and that Danes come in many colours including, black and finishing the argument that “The Little Mermaid” is a cartoon, not a biopic and could cast her in any colour they wished! The upcoming film is full of other wonderful characters, including Sebastian played by Daveed Diggs, King Triton played by Javier Bardem, Flounder played by Jacob Tremblay, Ursula played by Melissa McCarthy, Prince Eric played by Jonah Hauer-King and Scuttle played by Awkwafina… Who is your favourite character in the film? The full casting line up looks simply phenomenal…..come on May 26 2023 we can’t wait!! Don’t forget to let us know which Planet Mermaid tail would look great on Halle!  Happy Mermaiding

Planet Mermaid helps save the Whales and Dolphins!

Planet Mermaid helps save the Whales and Dolphins!

Planet Mermaid is very proud to have one of its own mermaid team member’s sign up to the “Swim Serpentine” event to raise valuable funds for WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the leading global charity dedicated to the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises.  The Swim Serpentine event is a one day open water swimming event held on Saturday 18th September at the beautiful Serpentine in Hyde Park, London, home of the Serpentine Swimming Club.  Hyde Park swimming is open to everyone at the Serpentine Lido and is an amazing venue to do wild water swimming. Mermaid Ophelie who took no hesitation in signing up comments: “When I was given the opportunity to participate in this event, I said yes straight away without knowing too much about the details. I am always up for doing new and exciting things that challenge me and allow me to work towards a specific goal, all whilst raising money for a great cause.  I had recently seen articles about an annual tradition in the Faroe Islands in Denmark where a festival involves the needless killing of hundreds of dolphins and whales, these images have continued to be my inspiration and motivation for doing the swim. Whales, dolphins and all sea creatures are a Mermaid's best friend and they need to be saved, they all deserve a chance to live.  When I started training, I was barely able to swim 500m, and this was with lots of breaks! I can now swim 1600m with minimal breaks and longer sets, with each session I try and push myself to swim longer and further. I have loved swimming and being in the water, both in pools and outside in the fresh and most of the time very chilly water. My hair never looks nice, I always seem to have water in my ears and can’t get rid of the smell of chlorine, but it is completely worth it! I'm so excited for the event on the 18th September and can’t wait to swim alongside everyone else participating, I'm sure I won’t be the only mermaid there” Planet Mermaids founder Maggie goes on to say: “We at Planet Mermaid are super proud of Mermaid Ophelie for her endurance, strength and courage to improve her health and stamina whilst doing her part to help save whales, dolphins and porpoises; we are behind her at every stage of this exciting journey” Mermaid Ophelie is openwater swimming in her wetsuit and neoprene swim cap but has said if she raises enough for WDC she may think about using her mermaid tail or even enter other open water swim races in 2021! Mermaid Ophelie has been training extremely hard for this and if all goes well may look to do the North Channel Swim as her next challenge!! Ophelie has already smashed her £300 target which is simply amazing, lets help her get to her ultimate goal of £700, simply click on the link to go straight to her just giving page of you would like to donate to this worthy cause - https://bit.ly/3ySjHyb If Mermaid Ophelie has inspired you to try openwater swimming and you are thinking about where you can find “open water swimming near me” just google and locations will come up near you.  Mermaid Ophelie chose to train at Box End, Kempston in Bedfordshire, near Planet Mermaids HQ. Planet Mermaid will be cheering Mermaid Ophelie on during her swim the 18th September so keep an eye on our social media for live updates! Go Mermaid Ophelie you truly are an inspiration and the whales, dolphins and porpoises will be so proud of you!

Mermen – A Forgotten Legend

Mermen – A Forgotten Legend

When one hears the word “mermaid” you automatically think of beautiful females swimming gracefully amongst the waves with long flowing hair wearing gorgeous mermaid tails and mermaid tops.  Sometimes we forget that in addition to the romantic mermaid legends there are just as many fables about mermen. Different stories you read contain contradictive information about their demeanour.   Some have them to be warm-hearted whilst others claim they were unattractive and mean spirited. It was in Western Europe where the legend of the merman was strong in decades gone. Ireland folk called merpeople “merrows” who were thought to be both good and bad depending upon the thoughts of the tales authors.  Repeated stories throughout the Dark Ages described the male merrows as being hideous horrible creatures whilst the female merrows were kind and attractive. Legends also have mermen to be ancient gods.   A famous god known to all mermaid lovers from the book “The Little Mermaid” was the father of Ariel, King Triton.  Triton was an ancient Greek god of the sea and he was the son of gods Poseidon and Amphitrite.  He was depicted as half-man-half-fish with long hair and acknowledged to have caused great storms of the sea. Another god of the sea and fellow merman was “Glaucus”.  Legend has it that he ate a magical herb that led him into the transformation to a sea god.  He was said to be the confidant of the sea and guardian of sailors. Mermen are not just a thing of the past there has been a big increase in the number of men who have recently started dressing up as mermen.  Some see it as a way of expressing their love for the sea and others have made it their profession working as resort entertainers or models, all of whom have large social media followings. There are many exclusively designed products on the market including mermaid tails and other merchandise for mermen or merboys. One company in particular Planet Mermaid has a dedicated line for merboys called Planet Shark.  This collection sees boy’s mermaid tails, monofins, t-shirts and shark leggings designed exclusively for merboys. Now the boys can chase the mermaids as a shark complete with a shark fin and cool tail!!
