The New “The Little Mermaid” Film is coming to our screens!
There has been massive excitement recently with news that filming has now finished for the new “The Little Mermaid” Disney film, although the release date is set for May 26 2023 fans are already super excited and are counting down the days..months..years until it comes out in the cinema. All the team at Planet Mermaid cannot wait and have been debating as to which Planet Mermaid inspired tail would look the best on the gorgeously talented Halle Bailey who has been cast as Ariel little mermaid. Past castings has seen Ariel little mermaid in green and purple, similar to our very own Sea Star or Purple Surf collection Or will they completely change and maybe go for a Sunset Splash style? This tone would look amazing on Halle Bailey really showing off her amazing colour! What do you think Halle should wear; we would love to hear from you on our socials! Next let’s talk material; will it be an inexpensive silicone mermaid tail to go with a silicone monofin? Or will it be a custom silicone mermaid tail or something completely different such as a neoprene mermaid tail?! Planet Mermaid would also love to see Halle in its very own Magic Fin Monofin with three colours available to choose from. Halle would have no problem in choosing which one to go with her mermaid tail! The choices are just endless and we cannot wait to see what the end result will look like. It has not been plain sailing for Halle Bailey, who at only 19 was hit with criticism soon after she was announced by Disney that she would be Ariel in the live action production of the animated classic, “The Little Mermaid”. Twitter and other social media channels were inundated with an online petition #NotMyAriel which saw opinionated and cartoon purists complain that she did not look like the original version of princess Ariel mermaid who was white and a redhead in the 1989 version of the film. Halle however came back in true mermaid style commented: “"I just feel like this role was something bigger than me and greater. I feel like I'm dreaming and I'm just grateful and I don't pay attention to the negativity. It's going to be beautiful and I'm just so excited to be a part of it." Source: BBC Newsbeat Such inspiring words from such a young actress! Planet Mermaid applauds you for your courage, professionalism and ultimate girl power! Disney also hit back defending Halle by pointing out that the original “The Little Mermaid” story was created in 1837 by the famous Danish author Hans Christian Anderson, and that Danes come in many colours including, black and finishing the argument that “The Little Mermaid” is a cartoon, not a biopic and could cast her in any colour they wished! The upcoming film is full of other wonderful characters, including Sebastian played by Daveed Diggs, King Triton played by Javier Bardem, Flounder played by Jacob Tremblay, Ursula played by Melissa McCarthy, Prince Eric played by Jonah Hauer-King and Scuttle played by Awkwafina… Who is your favourite character in the film? The full casting line up looks simply phenomenal…..come on May 26 2023 we can’t wait!! Don’t forget to let us know which Planet Mermaid tail would look great on Halle! Happy Mermaiding
Planet Mermaid helps save the Whales and Dolphins!
Planet Mermaid is very proud to have one of its own mermaid team member’s sign up to the “Swim Serpentine” event to raise valuable funds for WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the leading global charity dedicated to the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises. The Swim Serpentine event is a one day open water swimming event held on Saturday 18th September at the beautiful Serpentine in Hyde Park, London, home of the Serpentine Swimming Club. Hyde Park swimming is open to everyone at the Serpentine Lido and is an amazing venue to do wild water swimming. Mermaid Ophelie who took no hesitation in signing up comments: “When I was given the opportunity to participate in this event, I said yes straight away without knowing too much about the details. I am always up for doing new and exciting things that challenge me and allow me to work towards a specific goal, all whilst raising money for a great cause. I had recently seen articles about an annual tradition in the Faroe Islands in Denmark where a festival involves the needless killing of hundreds of dolphins and whales, these images have continued to be my inspiration and motivation for doing the swim. Whales, dolphins and all sea creatures are a Mermaid's best friend and they need to be saved, they all deserve a chance to live. When I started training, I was barely able to swim 500m, and this was with lots of breaks! I can now swim 1600m with minimal breaks and longer sets, with each session I try and push myself to swim longer and further. I have loved swimming and being in the water, both in pools and outside in the fresh and most of the time very chilly water. My hair never looks nice, I always seem to have water in my ears and can’t get rid of the smell of chlorine, but it is completely worth it! I'm so excited for the event on the 18th September and can’t wait to swim alongside everyone else participating, I'm sure I won’t be the only mermaid there” Planet Mermaids founder Maggie goes on to say: “We at Planet Mermaid are super proud of Mermaid Ophelie for her endurance, strength and courage to improve her health and stamina whilst doing her part to help save whales, dolphins and porpoises; we are behind her at every stage of this exciting journey” Mermaid Ophelie is openwater swimming in her wetsuit and neoprene swim cap but has said if she raises enough for WDC she may think about using her mermaid tail or even enter other open water swim races in 2021! Mermaid Ophelie has been training extremely hard for this and if all goes well may look to do the North Channel Swim as her next challenge!! Ophelie has already smashed her £300 target which is simply amazing, lets help her get to her ultimate goal of £700, simply click on the link to go straight to her just giving page of you would like to donate to this worthy cause - https://bit.ly/3ySjHyb If Mermaid Ophelie has inspired you to try openwater swimming and you are thinking about where you can find “open water swimming near me” just google and locations will come up near you. Mermaid Ophelie chose to train at Box End, Kempston in Bedfordshire, near Planet Mermaids HQ. Planet Mermaid will be cheering Mermaid Ophelie on during her swim the 18th September so keep an eye on our social media for live updates! Go Mermaid Ophelie you truly are an inspiration and the whales, dolphins and porpoises will be so proud of you!

The Evolution of Make Up
History behind Make Up Make up started to be used as early as 4000B.C to enhance beauty. Ancient Egyptians, the first known to have created this worldwide craze, shows images of Egyptian ladies wearing makeup around their eyes. It was understood that the main reason for this ritual was to please the gods, as women felt their appearance was directly related to their spiritual worth. The eye makeup applied was called mesdement (from the ancient Egyptian word msdmt) a mixture of copper and lead ore around their eyes. Green shades then went on the lower eyelids and black and dark grey was applied to the lashes and upper eyelids. It was thought that dark colours were said to ward off "evil eyes". To complete the ornate look around the eyes, they added almond shapes of dark-coloured powder (later called kohl) that might have been a combination of ingredients such as burnt almonds, oxidised copper, copper ores, lead, ash, and ochre. The connection between beauty and spirituality remained for centuries until the Romans came into power and discontinued many of the Egyptians cosmetic formulas. Since then the way people express themselves has evolved enormously. The cosmetics industry makes billions of pounds annually and fashion has set the standards for beauty. In one form or another it is the perfect way of expressing a person’s inner passion through the art of make up! How to become a mermaid?
Mermaids are the new unicorns - the next trendy mythological creature to take over the world. No-one can resist adding some magic and fairy tale to their routine lives by spending a couple of hours living in an underwater wonderland. So, let us tell you the secret for making the dreams come true. 1. Mermaid tail The most important feature of a real mermaid, is a mermaid tail. What makes a good tail is a nice, large rigid tail tip. There are multiple types of mermaid tails. Here at Planet Mermaid we create fabric tails which are very lightweight, combined with a separate rigid monofin insert to help improve swimming action. An alternative to fabric is mermaid tails made from silicone. These come as a single piece and while they weigh more, the silicone allows for different textures and shapes. The choice is yours! Our mermaid tails for children are made from fabric as the weight of the material is key; however we are also launching a range of silicone adult tails. 2. Mermaid hair Hairstyle is extremely important for a complete mermaid look. Just think of that beautiful quiff that the Little Mermaid has. Depending on how adventurous you are, you can go for an effortless beach waves style or for a full mermaid hair colour that became so popular around Instagram recently. Beach waves style can be created with some salt water spray or just a bit of wax. Follow this tutorial to recreate it - no curling iron is required, so it works well for young mermaids too as it doesn’t damage hair. For those feeling more adventurous, try mermaid hair colouring. This could be done with a variety techniques and dyes. We would suggest trying hair chalks. The colours will be less pronounced, however it doesn’t affect the hair and will wash out with the first wash. Just perfect for both little mermaids and adult ones. Some inspiration for you! Anything from gentle pinks to saturated purples and greens would look amazing. The devil is in the details. Add some marine accessories - like these starfish clips by PoppyCoast shop. 3. Water Mermaid outfits are often worn for photoshoots only or as fancy dress. If that’s your case, feel free to skip these last steps to becoming a mermaid. However, if you are into swimming, you should find some water first. Unfortunately some of the UK’s swimming pools banned use of mermaid tails, so give your local swimming pool a call before going there to ensure that swimming with a monofin is allowed.Hotel swimming pools and resort beaches are normally very loyal to mermaids, so taking your tail on holiday is a must.We are opening up a network of mermaid-friendly swimming pools across the UK, you can sign up here to stay up-to-date with local openings. 4. Mermaid swimming training The next step to becoming a mermaid is to learn to swim as a mermaid! There are certain safety rules to follow when starting swimming with a monofin. You should be able to swim pretty well before trying swimming with a monofin. Try swimming with no tail and only a monofin first. A dolphin kick may feel a bit complicated at the beginning but swimmers pick it up very fast. You can find more rules here. The next step is the most exciting one! Get your tail ready! 5. Become a mermaid! And the last step to experiencing true mermaid life is to wear your beautiful mermaid tail, jump into the water and swim as a mermaid, stealing all the attention whether you are on the beach or at the swimming pool! Don’t forget to take a Go Pro or a waterproof phone to shoot some amazing mermaid swimming videos!
