The day, mainly held on the third Sunday in June, celebrates fatherhood and male parenting. It was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd and its first celebration was on the 19th June 1910. Her father, William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised 6 children and Sorona wanted to do something special for him. Planet Mermaid has Launched National Merboy Day!
Planet Mermaid can exclusively reveal that it is launching National Merboy Day on Wednesday 4th September 2019. Merboys are often seen as the poor relation to their female counterpart the mermaid but Planet Mermaid is hoping that the launch of this day will alter people’s perceptions and bring them to the forefront. History A “merboy” a young merman, takes the form of a boy human from the waist up and a fish like creature from the waist down, similar to mermaids in having scaly fish tails to replace legs.In much contrast to mermaids mermen or boys were traditionally known to be unattractive, however this theory has been changed over time and they are now perceived to be handsome. Mermen have also been known to be wild and naughty but also wise teachers. Similar to mermaids they can attract humans with their enchanted beauty and siren like singing voices. To celebrate this day Help Planet Mermaid celebrate “National Merboy Day” by putting on an activity where you live. Why not have a party with your friends and all dress up or celebrate at a water park or even just be in your own garden with a paddling pool…there are so many different ways we can promote the true excellence that is to be a Merboy! Mermen – A Forgotten Legend
When one hears the word “mermaid” you automatically think of beautiful females swimming gracefully amongst the waves with long flowing hair wearing gorgeous mermaid tails and mermaid tops. Sometimes we forget that in addition to the romantic mermaid legends there are just as many fables about mermen. Different stories you read contain contradictive information about their demeanour. Some have them to be warm-hearted whilst others claim they were unattractive and mean spirited. It was in Western Europe where the legend of the merman was strong in decades gone. Ireland folk called merpeople “merrows” who were thought to be both good and bad depending upon the thoughts of the tales authors. Repeated stories throughout the Dark Ages described the male merrows as being hideous horrible creatures whilst the female merrows were kind and attractive. Legends also have mermen to be ancient gods. A famous god known to all mermaid lovers from the book “The Little Mermaid” was the father of Ariel, King Triton. Triton was an ancient Greek god of the sea and he was the son of gods Poseidon and Amphitrite. He was depicted as half-man-half-fish with long hair and acknowledged to have caused great storms of the sea. Another god of the sea and fellow merman was “Glaucus”. Legend has it that he ate a magical herb that led him into the transformation to a sea god. He was said to be the confidant of the sea and guardian of sailors. Mermen are not just a thing of the past there has been a big increase in the number of men who have recently started dressing up as mermen. Some see it as a way of expressing their love for the sea and others have made it their profession working as resort entertainers or models, all of whom have large social media followings. There are many exclusively designed products on the market including mermaid tails and other merchandise for mermen or merboys. One company in particular Planet Mermaid has a dedicated line for merboys called Planet Shark. This collection sees boy’s mermaid tails, monofins, t-shirts and shark leggings designed exclusively for merboys. Now the boys can chase the mermaids as a shark complete with a shark fin and cool tail!! Working with The Only Way is Essex!
We were just reviewing the work we have done with ITVb and TOWIE over the last 2 summers. It was a truly amazing experience to design and make a custom tail for Bobby Norris for the opening episode of the new season last year. He looked mer-mazing and really wowed the crowds and the media attention was fantastic! We have all the magazines and newspaper articles and really do feel proud to have been part of the show. We loved the fact that Bobby recognized the on trend mermaid movement sweeping the nation back in 2015 "mermaids are so on trend right now". Bobby the wise merman! We were over the moon when the producers contacted us again to ask for more Planet Mermaid pieces for reality TV stars Chloe Meadows and Courtney Green. We supplied our MerPlanet Leggings in Starbright Princess and the Frozen Aqua. Both mermaids looked spectacular and used the Mahina fins purchased from us. They took to the water as professional mermaids! We all do believe that Miss Chloe Meadows really is a mermaid and we loved seeing her mermaid inspired Halloween costume and look forward to helping the fantastic staff and stars of ITVb and other media related opportunities.
