It’s the Zodiac month of Water!
Sign Meaning If you are lucky enough to be born between June 21 and July 22 you will know that you are born under the astrological zodiac sign of Cancer. Cancer is the fourth of the 12 signs of the zodiac which begins its cycle at the start of summer during the Cancer season. In astrology, Cancer is the cardinal sign of the Water trigon sharing this love with the other two zodiac signs Scorpio and Pisces. Though some depictions of Cancer feature a lobster, the sign is most often represented by the crab, based on the Karkinos, a giant crab that harassed Heracles during his fight with the Hydra. As far as astrology goes Cancer is one of the most challenging horoscopes to get to know. For anyone lucky enough to be born in this sign it is said that they are deeply affectionate and passionate and care wholeheartedly about important matters such as family and home. Those born with their sun in Cancer are also very sympathetic and loyal and can sympathise with other people’s suffering and pain. Key qualities of a Cancer lie in its name: C for caring A for ambitious N for nourishing C for creative E for emotionally intelligent R for resilient We have been talking about the signs of the zodiac for decades and it is recorded that the earliest Zodiac found in Egypt dates to the 1st century BC, the Dendera Zodiac. Particularly important in the development of horoscopic astrology was the astrologer and astronomer Ptolemy, who lived in Alexandria in Egypt. Dante, a famous Italian poet in the late middle ages, even made reference to the Cancer sign in his Paradiso, the third and final part of Dantes Divine Comedy writing: Thereafterward a light among them brightened, So that, if Cancer one such crystal had, Winter would have a month of one sole day. — Dante, Paradiso[14]Like all the signs of the Zodiac Cancer is extremely interesting and with its link to water makes it that extra bit special! Below is a fantastic quote which I think sum up being a Cancerian. We are currently on the lookout for the next Planet Mermaid child model – https://www.instagram.com/p/BzYd0P-pKyl/ Keep up to date with all our Planet Mermaid info by visiting our social media pages -Instagram/Twitter - @planetmermaidFacebook - @planetmermaidsKeep mermaiding and sharking!www.planetmermaid.com
Start a mermaid young, and their Planet Mermaid journey becomes something quite magical…
Most little girls can only dream of becoming a mermaid, but when Planet Mermaid swam into the swimwear scene back in 2009, these dreams could suddenly become real. And now there are Planet Mermaid mermaids all over the globe, fighting the good fight against climate change and plastic-free oceans. ‘I live by lots of beaches and hate seeing litter on the fish,’ mermaid Kioni from New Zealand told us when we asked how she felt about the climate change debates in London. ‘It makes me so sad and angry that human’s rubbish hurts the sealife.’ Fellow mermaids Josephine and Megan are also learning about climate change and the environment at school – ‘it’s really important to us to help save the environment and animals, particularly those that live in the seas and rivers.’Kioni was gifted her first tail when she was only eight and has grown up loving the freedom it brings her. ‘It’s so fun being in the water with my friends and swimming faster than my brother in my Planet Mermaid tail. I love all the different colours, and even though I’m now 12, I’m already on my third tail!’ Growing up with Planet Mermaid has almost become a rite of passage for many of their buyers, and it’s easy to see why younger siblings are often quick to follow in the fins of their older sisters or brothers. ‘Planet Mermaid is so mermazing, because it feels like make-believe comes to life!’ Josephine, 10, told us, with her eight-year-old sister, Megan swiftly adding, ‘It makes you go faster and glide through the water like a real mermaid.’ Their friend Imogen, 10, is also a huge Planet Mermaid fan, buying her first tail at the same time as Josephine when they were seven. For ten years, Planet Mermaid has been capturing a part of life that is vanishing for some children – and our loyal mermaids are proof that it doesn’t just sell swimwear, it sells an experience that keeps on giving.

Planet Mermaid Supports “Friends of the Ocean”
Planet Mermaid is committed to saving the ocean and wants to make similar minded folk aware just how important it is to us and primarily what we can do to help save it from ultimate destruction. The ocean is the largest ecosystem on our Earth and it is fundamentally our planets life support system. Living oceans absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reduce climate change impacts. It is vital to the interest of humankind. To put it bluntly our oceans can exist without us but we as humans cannot exist without them and ironically it is us humans that are destroying this amazing eco system. Did you know that in the UK no one lives more than 70 miles away from the coast! Primarily the biggest problems facing our oceans are human numbers, carbon-dioxide driven warming and acidification, overfishing and plastics. What can we do to help! Mind Your Carbon Footprint and Reduce Energy Consumption Reduce the effects of climate change on the ocean by leaving the car at home when you can and being conscious of your energy use at home and work. A few things you can do to get started today: Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs, take the stairs and huddle up or use a fan to avoid oversetting your thermostat. Make Safe, Sustainable Seafood Choices Global fish populations are rapidly being depleted due to demand, loss of habitat and unsustainable fishing practices. When shopping or dining out, help reduce the demand for overexploited species by choosing seafood that is both healthful and sustainable. Use Fewer Plastic Products Plastics that end up as ocean debris contribute to habitat destruction and entangle and kill tens of thousands of marine animals each year. To limit your impact carry a reusable water bottle, store food in non-disposable containers, bring your own reusable bag when shopping and recycle whenever possible. Every year, around 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enters the ocean, where it can prove fatal to marine life. Help Take Care of the Beach Whether you enjoy diving, surfing or relaxing on the beach always clean up after yourself. Explore and appreciate the ocean without interfering with wildlife or removing rocks and coral. Go even further by encouraging others to respect the marine environment or by participating in local beach clean-ups. Don't Purchase Items That Exploit Marine Life Certain products contribute to the harming of fragile coral reefs and marine populations. Avoid purchasing items such as coral jewellery, tortoiseshell hair accessories and shark products. Be an Ocean-Friendly Pet Owner Read pet food labels and consider seafood sustainability when choosing a diet for your pet. Never flush cat litter which can contain pathogens harmful to marine life. Avoid stocking your aquarium with wild-caught saltwater fish and never release any aquarium fish into the ocean or other bodies of water, a practice that can introduce non-native species harmful to the existing ecosystem. Support Organizations Working to Protect the Ocean Many institutes and organisations are fighting to protect ocean habitats and marine wildlife. Find a national organisation and consider giving financial support or volunteering for hands-on work. If you live near the coast join up with a local branch or group and get involved in projects close to home. Travel the Ocean Responsibly Practice responsible boating, kayaking, and other recreational activities on the water. Never throw anything overboard, and be aware of marine life in the waters around you. Educate Yourself about Oceans and Marine Life All life on Earth is connected to the ocean and its inhabitants. The more you learn about the issues facing this vital system, the more you’ll want to help ensure its health—then share that knowledge to educate and inspire others. Easter Mermaid Style
Easter is such a fun time of the year filled with family get together’s and lots of chocolate being consumed. It also has an important religious meaning as it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The holiday is a series of events that begin with Lent, a 40 day period of fasting ending with Holy Week, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The bible states that Christ died on Good Friday and came back to life on Easter Sunday. Easter falls on a different date each year depending when there is a full moon in spring. This year it falls on Sunday April 21st where it is tradition on this date to celebrate with family and friends and be gifted edibles such as Easter eggs and children have the fun of going on Easter egg hunts to get as many decorated or edible eggs as they can in their baskets. For children the most exciting part of Easter is eating the mountains of chocolate they receive which has now become a tradition, however in the early years eating eggs was not allowed by church wardens during the lead up to Easter and any eggs laid that week were saved and decorated to be given to the children as gifts during Easter Sunday. The Victorian era altered this tradition and replaced the traditional egg with satin- covered cardboard eggs filled with Easter gifts. This tradition has grown and grown each year and now boasts an array of chocolate and other Easter gifts to share amongst family and friends. Easter is also famous for the Easter bunny. It is thought that this story came to life in the 19th Century and rabbits, which always breed large litters, became a symbol of new life fitting perfectly into the traditional Easter story. For the mermaid lovers amongst us the thought of magical mermaid creations and glittery chocolate delights are far more exciting than Easter bunnies. The delight of receiving a mermaid inspired Easter gift far outweighs that of any other Easter treat. There are so many creations on the market now to choose from ranging from traditional chocolate creations to painted egg shells and DIY kits. Why not even go on a mermaid Easter egg hunt! World Wildlife Day- Life below water
This month has seen the celebration of the annual World Wildlife Day. There are so many amazing animals on our planet that need the recognition they deserve and this year’s theme “Life below water” is a topic very close to Planet Mermaid’s heart. This is a time to renew our appreciation for our planets oceans and marine life that lives below the magical waters and raise awareness about the breathtaking diversity that marine life brings.Did you know that…. Our ocean cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface Less than 5% of the planets oceans have been explored Over 70 per cent of our planet’s oxygen is produced by the ocean The Pacific Ocean is the world’s largest ocean and contains around 25,000 islands Around 50 per cent of the US lies beneath the ocean It’s possible to find rivers and lakes beneath the ocean We still only know a fraction of the marine species in our oceans There are more historic artefacts under the sea than in all of the world’s museums The world’s longest mountain chain is underwater The majority of life on Earth is aquatic The ocean is just one of those amazing places which oozes fantastic sea life species and with nearly 200,000 already identified species with millions yet to be accounted for the ocean needs much needed recognition and exposure to get the remaining unidentified species accounted for. Below is just a very small selection of these almost alien like creatures that live their lives deep within our oceans. Feather Star – these creatures wave their feathers to get around the waterGlaucus Atlanticus - aka. the “blue dragon” is a type of stinging sea slug! Leafy Sea Dragon – it is actually a type of fish! It is a very sad fact that as much as 40% of the ocean is now heavily affected by the most significant and direct threat of over exploitation of marine species as well as other threats such as pollution, loss of coastal habitats and climate change. The Sea Life Trust is just one charity whose vision is to have a world where oceans are healthy, properly protected and full of diverse life. Through global campaigns and projects they champion the need for plastic free oceans, sustainable fishing, effective marine protected areas and an end to over-exploitation of marine life.It is time for us ocean lovers to show our support and help preserve these precious creatures that live below our oceans in an amazing underwater world… Visit www.sealifetrust.org to find out more and see how you can help out this wonderful cause, You never know you may even come across a real life mermaid in your quest! Please send us your ideas for support and ways you have helped during World Wildlife Day on our social media platforms, we would love to see them and share with fellow mermaid lovers! @PlanetMermaid #planetmermaid#WorldWildlifeDay, #LifeBelowWater, #PeopleAndPlanet, #WWD2018, #DoOneThingToday, #MarineSpecies Visit www.planetmermaid.com to view our latest in amazing mermaid and shark tails for kids and adults alike! Mermaid Tattoos for the seriously enthusiastic mermaid lovers amongst us
The tattoo industry is a booming market, last year the industry generated a staggering $1.6 billion in revenue according to the market research firm IBISWorld and there is no sign of a downturn. In fact over the next decade the industry is looking at a growth rate of 7.7%. Today it is estimated that over a third of 25-29 year-olds have at least one tattoo with woman comprising of half of this figure. This boom is a result of a rise in professionally trained artists doing a more competent job also contributed by the increase in celebrity and media exposure. Famous celebrities who openly show off their body art include Justin Bieber, Rhianna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga to name just a few! This boom has also seen an increase in the amount of diverse tattoos available to choose from which can make your own choice a stressful process as you want to ensure the one you ultimately pick reflects your own personality. The choice of size, colour, meaning and placement are also other major factors to consider in this process. For those of us passionate about mermaids it is the perfect opportunity to bring the passion to life and show off your inner love. The mermaid symbol goes far beyond the Disney princess meaning some even say it can go as deep as the ocean itself. Other meanings associated with this symbol include danger, sensuality, temptation all of which are steeped in history. With our own bodies made primarily of water it can also been a symbolism of people’s desire to swim in the vast oceans and get lost under the waves into an underwater world full of mystery, charm and intrigue releasing their inner sensuality and feminine beauty whilst showing the world they are not shy to bare their bodies. Mermaids are the admired descendants of Aphrodite and Venus, the goddesses of both love and beauty which is also an added attraction for choosing a mermaid inspired tattoo. There are many different mermaid inspired design ideas out there to choose from. They vary from the perceived pretty mermaid with long flowing hair and a beautiful mermaid tail sitting on a rock with the waves lashing around her to the portrayed Disney character of Ariel from the Little Mermaid. Whatever your design you will be sure it reflects your nature and individuality. Beautiful examples of mermaid tattoos can be seen below: Mermaid Tail Tattoo Amazed by this wonder of symbolism associated with a mermaid tattoo…go on celebrate and embrace your inner and outer beauty.
