Where is the Little Mermaid set (and other interesting facts)
The Little Mermaid is one of the most famous animated films by Disney that is based on a fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen and our absolute favourite. In this article we are going to cover a few interesting and controversial facts about this cartoon. Who wrote the Little Mermaid? As we have mentioned, the original story was written by Hand Christian Andersen, a famous Danish author who is most known for his fairy tales. The story that he tells is more dramatic and less cheerful than Disney’s interpretation. Where is the Little Mermaid set? The Little Mermaid action takes place under the sea, in the kingdom of Atlantica that is supposedly located in Denmark, where Hans Christian Andersen is from. This may be true for an original story and in fact there is even a statue of Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. However, when it comes to Disney version of the story, the location seems to be different. There are multiple versions and opinions on where the film takes place. Eric’s castle and other onshore houses are made from white material that seems to be marble, which is a popular material in Mediterranean or Southern Europe. General aesthetics of the town and house fittings remind us of France, whilst flora and fauna seem quite tropical and we can see flamingos and palm trees. On the other hand, being a prince, Eric could have easily afforded to import flamingos to his private lake as well as plant and maintain the palm trees, after all you can occasionally see palm tree varieties in some gardens in the UK. All in all, according to our independent research and knowledge of merworld, we have came to the conclusion that the Little Mermaid is set in the Mediterranean sea, with Eric’s castle being located on one of the islands. How old is Ariel the Little Mermaid? Ariel is 16 years old when the first film takes place. She is over 28 years old in the second film, The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea and she is a little mermaid-girl in the third movie that depicts her early childhood, “The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning”. She wears a green tail similar to the Planet Mermaid flagship Sea Star tail https://tinyurl.com/planet-mermaid Who is playing the Little Mermaid? As many other Little Mermaids fans we can’t wait to see the new live action remake by Disney that is gossiped, but not confirmed to be released in November 2021. Ariel is played by Halle Bailey and we think that her cheeky smile and beautiful eyes match Ariel’s character perfectly. Let’s hope that the rest of the movie would be as good as our expectations set very high thanks to the success of the original film. What is Sebastian from the Little Mermaid? Sebastian is Ariel’s crustacean friend that speaks with a Jamaican accents and self identifies as a crab, even though he looks a bit like a lobster and official Disney sources name him a lobster. He loves music and in fact, after the success of the Little Mermaid, Disney has released three albums under the name of Sebastian from The Little Mermaid that feature reggae-inspired hits by Sebastian and a few hits from the film itself. What type of fish is Flounder from Little Mermaid? Despite his name, Flounder is not actually a flounder but a tropical fish. His look combines features of multiple fishes of tropical appearance. To us he looks like a mix of a puffer fish(left) and Caribbean Blue Angelfish (right).
National Sea Monkey Day
Yay today is National Sea Monkey Day! Have you ever had your own sea monkeys to grow? The excitement of sprinkling that magical ingredient into the water and then watching them hatch, diving and flipping around in the water. Source: Google The contentment and wonder of watching a creature being born right in front of you is just amazing! Did you know that Sea Monkeys were invented in 1957 by Harold von Braunhut and have been part of our households since the 1960’s! They have even made appearances on television including The Simpsons and Desperate Housewives! But…the most amazing experience they have encountered was on October 29th 1998 when they went into space with the astronaut John Glenn aboard Space Shuttle Discovery. After nine days in space they returned to Earth and hatched eight weeks later completely unaffected by their travels…WOW!! Source: Google How do Sea Monkeys get their name as they don’t live in the sea nor do they look like monkeys? Well it is because they have long tails and demonstrate playful, monkey like behaviour! One of the most fascinating characteristics of the Sea Monkey is its ability to live for years as an egg before it hatches, and then once hatched they grow steadily over the next few weeks feeding on a diet of yeast and spirulina. Source: Google Want to know some Sea Monkey facts to impress your friends?! Sea Monkeys have three eyes and breathe through their feet! Sea Monkeys go by many names. They are actually a form of brine shrimp with the biological name of "Artemia NYOS". Sometimes they are also called seed shrimps When Sea Monkeys are born, they are so tiny it’s very difficult to see them. In about a month’s time, they grow to about a half inch in length and will begin mating to make more baby Sea Monkeys! Sea Monkeys are loving little creatures who kiss and cuddle to show affection for one another When Sea Monkeys need more oxygen, they will swim upside down. Since they breathe through their feet, this type of swimming provides it. A cousin shrimp, the fairy shrimp, swims upside down all the time The “special ingredient” that is added to the Sea Monkey’s water is actually sea salt. Sea Monkeys have to live in salt water to survive Sea Monkeys eat algae, so unless it gets too bad, don’t clean the sides of their tank of algae You can tell a Sea Monkey is properly fed when you see its tummy turns black after eating If the tank is too cold, Sea Monkeys won’t grow Sea Monkeys can change colour anywhere from white to a deep, dark red Male Sea Monkeys have whiskers on their chins 6 degrees is the perfect temperature for a Sea Monkey tank They can live up to 2 years if cared for well Source: https://bit.ly/2zTlBWq Why not celebrate National Sea Monkey Day by buying some Sea Monkeys of your own and enjoy watching them grow! How to choose a swimsuit for a girl?
When it comes to choosing a swimsuit for a child, there are so many things to consider, especially if you are getting it as a gift. When choosing a swimsuit the key things to take into consideration are: Size and age Shape/type of garment and its comfort Understanding of where it is going to be used Any additional features Design, colours and patterns Size of the girl’s swimsuit Most of the retailers offer size charts, so check them first as each brand would have slightly different measurements. Very often children's clothing comes categorised by age, rather than measurements, so if you are buying a gift ensure to find out the age first, as it may be helpful. Our girls swimsuits offer both – age guidance and exact measurements. If you think that the girl you are buying for is taller or shorter than most kids for her age, exact measurements would help. If you can’t get measurements, reaching out to the merchant and asking them for help with choosing the right size is always an option. Type or shape of the swimsuit Understanding how the swimsuit is likely to be used will help you with your decision. Indoors swimming pool The usual choice for indoor swimming is a one-piece swimming suit, as it stays in place and comfortable to swim in. Darker, professional-looking swimsuits are often preferred for swimming classes, whilst if you are attending a swimming pool for leisure, you can always pick something very colourful. Outdoors swimming Outdoor swimming have different requirements with a few more things to consider – a cute bikini set is often a good choice. They come in all possible colours and patterns and don’t forget that wearing a set of separates makes a trip to the bathroom much easier! Girls’ UV swimsuit Another factor to take into consideration is sun protection. Children skin is sensitive and needs extra protection. Tops with long sleeves or rash guards may become a nice option and if that feels a bit too much, ensure that the swimsuit of your choice provides UV protection Girls swimsuits with skirt If you want to get something super cute, you may consider searching for a swimsuit with a little skirt. Some parents may argue that skirt doesn’t add any functionality and it is just an additional piece of fabric that extends drying time. Some parents just find it pretty. The choice is yours. Girls mermaid swimsuit It would be weird for us to not to mention our colourful mermaid swimsuits. Thanks to the vivid colours they stand out and attract attention. They also have matching mermaid tails that you can swim with, just saying...
Global Recycling Day – 18th March 2020
Today is “Global Recycling Day” a day to highlight the importance of recycling and make us think about what we throw away. The last 100 years has seen a rise in temperatures seeing the hottest days recorded. The climate is now facing an emergency and if we do not each make changes to our way of living we will see a continued rise in global temperatures leading to melting icecaps, deforestation, fires and pollution. Source: globalrecyclingday.com Something very close to Planet Mermaids heart is the harm pollution is doing to our oceans. The invention of plastic plagues the land we live on, it is not only overwhelming landfills because it does not decay; it is also filling our oceans with harmful debris killing marine life. It is estimated that more than 817 animal species are affected by ocean pollution, an increase of 23% in the last five years alone! Source: Google Oceans are the biggest water bodies on our planet however in the last few decades’ surplus human activity have severely affected marine life. “Marine pollution is spreading harmful substances such as oil, plastic and other waste into our oceans. Source: Google Below are some disturbing facts that really put into perspective the problems our oceans are experiencing right now: The North Pacific Ocean is the most polluted of the World’s oceans – it holds 2 trillion pieces of plastic, representing one third of the total plastic found in our oceans! Plastics are the most common element found in the ocean today According to a recent study 18 billion pounds of plastic trash ends up in our oceans each year. That is enough to cover every foot of coastline around the world with 5 filled rubbish bags of plastic! The five most common items found in coastal clean-ups were plastic cigarette butts, food wrappers, plastic beverage bottles, plastic bottle caps and plastic straws There are 25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean, of that 269,000 tonnes float to the surface Plastic causes more than 80% of the negative effects on animals associated with ocean trash Ocean pollution kills more than one million sea birds each year Approximately every square mile of ocean has more than 45,000 pieces of plastic floating on it Over 100,000 marine animals die each year from plastic It is estimated by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish! Source:rubiconglobal.com It is not too late we can still turn this problem around but it needs everyone on board to do their bit to help the environment. Source: Google To get us stated why not start to follow the ten simple steps below to help make a difference and save our amazing oceans: Conserve water Reduce pollutants Reduce waste – recycle what you can Shop wisely Reduce vehicle pollution – walk more/do lift shares/take public transport Use less energy Fish responsibly Use reusable plastic products Respect our habitat Volunteer to help clean beaches, help with injured sea animals, raise money for worthy charities Source: oceanservice.noaa.gov Oceans provide a home to a wide variety of marine animals and plants and it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to play our parts to help make these oceans clean again so our important marine species…and mermaids can thrive for decades to come! Planet Mermaid your number one choice for mermaid tails and accessories
Most little girls and boys have dreamt of being able to swim like a beautiful mermaid or shark at least once during childhood. In fact the fascination with mermaids goes beyond famous movies like “The Little Mermaid” and “The Pirates of the Caribbean” it is thought that the attraction comes from the mermaid’s history of love and femininity. Mermaids inspire people with their love of romance, mystery, power and stylishness. Mermaid popularity is continually on the rise with new mermaid inspired films, fashion designers incorporating mermaid inspired designs into their own fashion lines and celebrities posting feeds on social media in their mermaid tails. The love of everything mermaid is something that will just continue to grow and we expect to see lots more movies being produced, songs, fashion labels, art and much more mermaid inspired products made available for everyone, young or old to enjoy for years to come. Lots of companies have joined this bandwagon but not all are quality and safety conscious, something which is of the upmost importance when purchasing a tail for either a child or adult alike. Companies like this are flooding the marketplace and offering cheap alternatives which may look cost attractive but are not always the best option. Below are the main points to consider when looking to purchase that perfect mermaid tail. Safety Above everything else you need to know that whoever you are buying for they can swim confidently. Planet Mermaid recommends that you should be able to swim confidently unaided for 25 metres. There are two elements to a mermaid tail, the tail itself and the fin. Both of which need to be researched carefully to ensure the correct purchase decision is made. Planet Mermaid uses a product called the “Magic Fin” it is UK manufactured and specifically designed for Planet Mermaid tails. The high ankle socks are great for “quick release” as well as giving full support around the ankles. The insert inside the magic fin sleeve is virtually indestructible and engineered for safety and comfort. The tail and monofin need to be the perfect fit to ensure ease in the water. All manufacturers should provide a safety guide with their tails. Planet Mermaid sends a leaflet out with all purchases as well as a dedicated safety page on its website. It is also essential that an adult be with a child at all times when using the tail in the water. Design Mermaid tails come in all shapes, sizes and styles. It is the style of the tail which is usually the final deciding factor when choosing your tail. Whether you want to stand out in the crowd or become Ariel herself there is a design out there for you. Things to help your decision should include making sure that the tail is 100% swimmable and of the highest quality fabric to ensure duration of the product. Planet Mermaids tails are chlorine and fade resistant to ensure the tail stays looking fresh for years to come. Cheaper alternatives will see material fading and stretching after a short life span of use. Planet Mermaid not only produces mermaid tails they also manufacture mermaid leggings, bikini tops, scrunchies, t-shirts and other amazing accessories to complete the mermaid look in a large range of designs. Sharks are also not forgotten our Planet Shark collection consists of merboy tails, boy mermaid costumes, swimming accessories and t-shirts. Planet Shark is all about high quality products that are made in a selection of stunning colours and designs and are meant to be used indoors and outdoors. Make splashes, run across the beach, play, swim and have fun. A perfect gift for a merboy - or just for a boy who enjoys swimming. Fitting Do not go for a “one size fits all” tail. It is essential that that tail fits the person buying for and reputable manufacturers should have tails that come in multiple sizes. Planet Mermaid offers a children’s collection suitable for 3 to 14 years and goes according to measurements for waist circumference, height and waist to ankle length. All manufacturers should have a sizing chart to look at when ordering. The monofin fit is done according to shoe size. Planet Mermaid has two types of monofins available; The “Magic Fin” fitting shoe sizes 11 – 6 and the “Atlantis” for shoe sizes 6-14. Quality Mermaid tails are made with swimmable fabric such as lycra and have agents which ensure they are chlorine and fade resistant. The fabric used ensures flexibility whilst getting it on and also when swimming. Ensure that the fabric is strong enough to prevent bobbling or holes made during use getting in and out of the water. Planet Mermaid provides a leaflet with its tails to ensure the longevity of its products. Pricing Pricing for tails varies greatly wherever you look. A tail set can start at £20 however the quality is usually very poor and will only last the user a couple of sessions due to the cheap fabric. It is more cost effective to invest in a slightly higher price bracket to ensure quality and durability. Planet Mermaids tails last for years and are often handed down to the next generation of mermaids and sharks to start their own magical experiences. . Where to use your tails Planet Mermaid has recently been in the press with its launch of “Mermaid Wave Swim School” where classes, located nationwide, are designed to give you water confidence and an understanding of how to use a monofin safely in water. You will be taught by fully trained instructors with over 15 years of experience to understand how to perform the butterfly kick at different swim lengths including twirls, twist and stroke efficiency. The course is robust and designed by professionals to give our mermaids and sharks the opportunity to learn new techniques and shine brightly. It is the perfect opportunity to learn to swim in your mermaid tail in a safe environment before heading out to larger waters! If you have any questions before making your purchase please do not hesitate to ask our professional opinion. With lots of variations on the marketplace it is essential that you make the right informed decision. If you are looking to purchase for a child take a look at our website to view all our safety videos, look at our amazing fabric mermaid tails and see our full collections or alternately visit www.mermaidplanet.co.uk for our full adult collections including adult mermaid tails and woman’s mermaid monofins, siren tails and a whole lot more!
