How to become a mermaid?
Mermaids are the new unicorns - the next trendy mythological creature to take over the world. No-one can resist adding some magic and fairy tale to their routine lives by spending a couple of hours living in an underwater wonderland. So, let us tell you the secret for making the dreams come true. 1. Mermaid tail The most important feature of a real mermaid, is a mermaid tail. What makes a good tail is a nice, large rigid tail tip. There are multiple types of mermaid tails. Here at Planet Mermaid we create fabric tails which are very lightweight, combined with a separate rigid monofin insert to help improve swimming action. An alternative to fabric is mermaid tails made from silicone. These come as a single piece and while they weigh more, the silicone allows for different textures and shapes. The choice is yours! Our mermaid tails for children are made from fabric as the weight of the material is key; however we are also launching a range of silicone adult tails. 2. Mermaid hair Hairstyle is extremely important for a complete mermaid look. Just think of that beautiful quiff that the Little Mermaid has. Depending on how adventurous you are, you can go for an effortless beach waves style or for a full mermaid hair colour that became so popular around Instagram recently. Beach waves style can be created with some salt water spray or just a bit of wax. Follow this tutorial to recreate it - no curling iron is required, so it works well for young mermaids too as it doesn’t damage hair. For those feeling more adventurous, try mermaid hair colouring. This could be done with a variety techniques and dyes. We would suggest trying hair chalks. The colours will be less pronounced, however it doesn’t affect the hair and will wash out with the first wash. Just perfect for both little mermaids and adult ones. Some inspiration for you! Anything from gentle pinks to saturated purples and greens would look amazing. The devil is in the details. Add some marine accessories - like these starfish clips by PoppyCoast shop. 3. Water Mermaid outfits are often worn for photoshoots only or as fancy dress. If that’s your case, feel free to skip these last steps to becoming a mermaid. However, if you are into swimming, you should find some water first. Unfortunately some of the UK’s swimming pools banned use of mermaid tails, so give your local swimming pool a call before going there to ensure that swimming with a monofin is allowed.Hotel swimming pools and resort beaches are normally very loyal to mermaids, so taking your tail on holiday is a must.We are opening up a network of mermaid-friendly swimming pools across the UK, you can sign up here to stay up-to-date with local openings. 4. Mermaid swimming training The next step to becoming a mermaid is to learn to swim as a mermaid! There are certain safety rules to follow when starting swimming with a monofin. You should be able to swim pretty well before trying swimming with a monofin. Try swimming with no tail and only a monofin first. A dolphin kick may feel a bit complicated at the beginning but swimmers pick it up very fast. You can find more rules here. The next step is the most exciting one! Get your tail ready! 5. Become a mermaid! And the last step to experiencing true mermaid life is to wear your beautiful mermaid tail, jump into the water and swim as a mermaid, stealing all the attention whether you are on the beach or at the swimming pool! Ginger Spice transforms into Mermaid Spice
Mermaid tails are making waves in the celebrity world, with the likes of Myleene Klass and Britney Spears enjoying a break at the pool wearing their tails. However, our favourite celebrity mermaid is former Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell, who posted a video of her mermaid transformation back in August of this year. She swam beautifully in our Sunset Splash Mermaid Tail and Magic Fin. Geri’s daughter Bluebell must be mermaid obsessed too as she was seen wearing our “Mermaid Off Duty” t-shirt in an Instagram video. Our t-shirts are perfect to pair with our leggings, which will give off mermaid vibes even when you can’t be by the sea. Geri looks at ease in the water and posted about how happy she was to be taking Monty to swimming lessons. Working with The Only Way is Essex!
We were just reviewing the work we have done with ITVb and TOWIE over the last 2 summers. It was a truly amazing experience to design and make a custom tail for Bobby Norris for the opening episode of the new season last year. He looked mer-mazing and really wowed the crowds and the media attention was fantastic! We have all the magazines and newspaper articles and really do feel proud to have been part of the show. We loved the fact that Bobby recognized the on trend mermaid movement sweeping the nation back in 2015 "mermaids are so on trend right now". Bobby the wise merman! We were over the moon when the producers contacted us again to ask for more Planet Mermaid pieces for reality TV stars Chloe Meadows and Courtney Green. We supplied our MerPlanet Leggings in Starbright Princess and the Frozen Aqua. Both mermaids looked spectacular and used the Mahina fins purchased from us. They took to the water as professional mermaids! What's in your fin? Ours has Magic!
We thought we would tell you a little more about the 'Magic' in our Magic Fin. The one piece (monofin) designed and made in the UK with mermaid safety in mind is the first manufactured neoprene monofin in the UK. It really is a premium quality swimming aid. The specially designed socks are fantastic to help mermaids have a 'quick release' and are designed for foot sizes UK 11 up to UK 6. As opposed to other monofins available that have strap related fixings that tend to have no 'quick release' method in place we feel the Magic Fin ticks the safety aspect full force. Not only is it lightweight and flexible it has specially designed groves and raised features on its insert to provide a smooth unified movement for the swimmer. The Magic Fin has been through vigorous testing and we are satisfied that it is the leader in the field of neoprene covered fins in the UK. The socks are a great length that go above the ankles and support the swimmer with propulsion through the water. The Magic Fin insert is flexible, highly durable and virtually indestructible. Above all safer in waters as opposed to other neoprene product monofins that use materials such as perspex and poly-carbonate. These types of inserts (perspex and polycarbonate) are dangerous and can shatter on impact. Please be sure to avoid any monofin with this material. They are easy to spot - the insert tends to be see through or a thin sheet of plastic.
