The New “The Little Mermaid” Film is coming to our screens!

The New “The Little Mermaid” Film is coming to our screens!

There has been massive excitement recently with news that filming has now finished for the new “The Little Mermaid” Disney film, although the release date is set for May 26 2023 fans are already super excited and are counting down the days..months..years until it comes out in the cinema. All the team at Planet Mermaid cannot wait and have been debating as to which Planet Mermaid inspired tail would look the best on the gorgeously talented Halle Bailey who has been cast as Ariel little mermaid.   Past castings has seen Ariel little mermaid in green and purple, similar to our very own Sea Star or Purple Surf collection  Or will they completely change and maybe go for a Sunset Splash style? This tone would look amazing on Halle Bailey really showing off her amazing colour!  What do you think Halle should wear; we would love to hear from you on our socials! Next let’s talk material; will it be an inexpensive silicone mermaid tail to go with a silicone monofin? Or will it be a custom silicone mermaid tail or something completely different such as a neoprene mermaid tail?! Planet Mermaid would also love to see Halle in its very own Magic Fin Monofin  with three colours available to choose from.  Halle would have no problem in choosing which one to go with her mermaid tail! The choices are just endless and we cannot wait to see what the end result will look like. It has not been plain sailing for Halle Bailey, who at only 19 was hit with criticism soon after she was announced by Disney that she would be Ariel in the live action production of the animated classic, “The Little Mermaid”.  Twitter and other social media channels were inundated with an online petition #NotMyAriel which saw opinionated and cartoon purists complain that she did not look like the original version of princess Ariel mermaid who was white and a redhead in the 1989 version of the film.  Halle however came back in true mermaid style commented: “"I just feel like this role was something bigger than me and greater. I feel like I'm dreaming and I'm just grateful and I don't pay attention to the negativity. It's going to be beautiful and I'm just so excited to be a part of it." Source: BBC Newsbeat Such inspiring words from such a young actress! Planet Mermaid applauds you for your courage, professionalism and ultimate girl power! Disney also hit back defending Halle by pointing out that the original “The Little Mermaid” story was created  in 1837 by the famous Danish author Hans Christian Anderson, and that Danes come in many colours including, black and finishing the argument that “The Little Mermaid” is a cartoon, not a biopic and could cast her in any colour they wished! The upcoming film is full of other wonderful characters, including Sebastian played by Daveed Diggs, King Triton played by Javier Bardem, Flounder played by Jacob Tremblay, Ursula played by Melissa McCarthy, Prince Eric played by Jonah Hauer-King and Scuttle played by Awkwafina… Who is your favourite character in the film? The full casting line up looks simply phenomenal…..come on May 26 2023 we can’t wait!! Don’t forget to let us know which Planet Mermaid tail would look great on Halle!  Happy Mermaiding

Planet Mermaid helps save the Whales and Dolphins!

Planet Mermaid helps save the Whales and Dolphins!

Planet Mermaid is very proud to have one of its own mermaid team member’s sign up to the “Swim Serpentine” event to raise valuable funds for WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the leading global charity dedicated to the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises.  The Swim Serpentine event is a one day open water swimming event held on Saturday 18th September at the beautiful Serpentine in Hyde Park, London, home of the Serpentine Swimming Club.  Hyde Park swimming is open to everyone at the Serpentine Lido and is an amazing venue to do wild water swimming. Mermaid Ophelie who took no hesitation in signing up comments: “When I was given the opportunity to participate in this event, I said yes straight away without knowing too much about the details. I am always up for doing new and exciting things that challenge me and allow me to work towards a specific goal, all whilst raising money for a great cause.  I had recently seen articles about an annual tradition in the Faroe Islands in Denmark where a festival involves the needless killing of hundreds of dolphins and whales, these images have continued to be my inspiration and motivation for doing the swim. Whales, dolphins and all sea creatures are a Mermaid's best friend and they need to be saved, they all deserve a chance to live.  When I started training, I was barely able to swim 500m, and this was with lots of breaks! I can now swim 1600m with minimal breaks and longer sets, with each session I try and push myself to swim longer and further. I have loved swimming and being in the water, both in pools and outside in the fresh and most of the time very chilly water. My hair never looks nice, I always seem to have water in my ears and can’t get rid of the smell of chlorine, but it is completely worth it! I'm so excited for the event on the 18th September and can’t wait to swim alongside everyone else participating, I'm sure I won’t be the only mermaid there” Planet Mermaids founder Maggie goes on to say: “We at Planet Mermaid are super proud of Mermaid Ophelie for her endurance, strength and courage to improve her health and stamina whilst doing her part to help save whales, dolphins and porpoises; we are behind her at every stage of this exciting journey” Mermaid Ophelie is openwater swimming in her wetsuit and neoprene swim cap but has said if she raises enough for WDC she may think about using her mermaid tail or even enter other open water swim races in 2021! Mermaid Ophelie has been training extremely hard for this and if all goes well may look to do the North Channel Swim as her next challenge!! Ophelie has already smashed her £300 target which is simply amazing, lets help her get to her ultimate goal of £700, simply click on the link to go straight to her just giving page of you would like to donate to this worthy cause - https://bit.ly/3ySjHyb If Mermaid Ophelie has inspired you to try openwater swimming and you are thinking about where you can find “open water swimming near me” just google and locations will come up near you.  Mermaid Ophelie chose to train at Box End, Kempston in Bedfordshire, near Planet Mermaids HQ. Planet Mermaid will be cheering Mermaid Ophelie on during her swim the 18th September so keep an eye on our social media for live updates! Go Mermaid Ophelie you truly are an inspiration and the whales, dolphins and porpoises will be so proud of you!

The Evolution of Make Up

The Evolution of Make Up

History behind Make Up Make up started to be used as early as 4000B.C to enhance beauty.  Ancient Egyptians, the first known to have created this worldwide craze, shows images of Egyptian ladies wearing makeup around their eyes.  It was understood that the main reason for this ritual was to please the gods, as women felt their appearance was directly related to their spiritual worth. The eye makeup applied was called mesdement (from the ancient Egyptian word msdmt) a mixture of copper and lead ore around their eyes. Green shades then went on the lower eyelids and black and dark grey was applied to the lashes and upper eyelids. It was thought that dark colours were said to ward off "evil eyes". To complete the ornate look around the eyes, they added almond shapes of dark-coloured powder (later called kohl) that might have been a combination of ingredients such as burnt almonds, oxidised copper, copper ores, lead, ash, and ochre. The connection between beauty and spirituality remained for centuries until the Romans came into power and discontinued many of the Egyptians cosmetic formulas. Since then the way people express themselves has evolved enormously.  The cosmetics industry makes billions of pounds annually and fashion has set the standards for beauty.    In one form or another  it is the perfect way of expressing a person’s inner passion through the art of make up! For merfolk it is the perfect solution to expressing their devotion to all things mer related.   Below are some fabulous creations to get your creative juices flowing! Little Mermaid Bedroom Mermaid Bedroom Furniture and Mermaid bedroom Rug Wall murals are a fantastic way of making a splash, below are some examples: Mermaid Bedroom Decor The bed is the focal point of the room so making sure you have the correct bedding to set your theme is very important. There are so many different designs out there to choose from depending on your own design, colour and budget.  Little Mermaid Bedroom Set Lighting is another hugely important factor as it changes the mood of a room and is a very important finishing touch element to making sure your design criteria is fulfilled. A little fact for you – did you know that the use of lighting can add to or subtract from the overall colours of a room.  Darker colours make a room feel smaller and cramped, while light-coloured walls do the opposite. The illusion of space is defined by light reflected off of the surfaces of the walls. Some types of lighting help with this illusion by further illuminating the walls. In addition, directional lighting, such as a track light, can soften the wall colours. There is also recessed lighting, which has a soft, downward glow that illuminates the floors, not walls. This is opposed to lights hung from the centre of the room, which provide ambient illumination, or wall lighting. In both cases, this can affect how light or dark a coloured section can appear. Mermaid Lights for the Bedroom Finally cutting yourself off from the outside world and into your magical fantasy is only complete when you close your curtains.Transforming into a world of fantasy doesn’t just have to be for children, adults can have just as much fun too designing their boudoir whether it be contemporary or out and out wacky the choice is yours! Start a mermaid young, and their Planet Mermaid journey becomes something quite magical…

Start a mermaid young, and their Planet Mermaid journey becomes something quite magical…

Most little girls can only dream of becoming a mermaid, but when Planet Mermaid swam into the swimwear scene back in 2009, these dreams could suddenly become real. And now there are Planet Mermaid mermaids all over the globe, fighting the good fight against climate change and plastic-free oceans. ‘I live by lots of beaches and hate seeing litter on the fish,’ mermaid Kioni from New Zealand told us when we asked how she felt about the climate change debates in London. ‘It makes me so sad and angry that human’s rubbish hurts the sealife.’ Fellow mermaids Josephine and Megan are also learning about climate change and the environment at school – ‘it’s really important to us to help save the environment and animals, particularly those that live in the seas and rivers.’Kioni was gifted her first tail when she was only eight and has grown up loving the freedom it brings her. ‘It’s so fun being in the water with my friends and swimming faster than my brother in my Planet Mermaid tail. I love all the different colours, and even though I’m now 12, I’m already on my third tail!’ Growing up with Planet Mermaid has almost become a rite of passage for many of their buyers, and it’s easy to see why younger siblings are often quick to follow in the fins of their older sisters or brothers. ‘Planet Mermaid is so mermazing, because it feels like make-believe comes to life!’ Josephine, 10, told us, with her eight-year-old sister, Megan swiftly adding, ‘It makes you go faster and glide through the water like a real mermaid.’ Their friend Imogen, 10, is also a huge Planet Mermaid fan, buying her first tail at the same time as Josephine when they were seven. For ten years, Planet Mermaid has been capturing a part of life that is vanishing for some children – and our loyal mermaids are proof that it doesn’t just sell swimwear, it sells an experience that keeps on giving.

Mermaid Tattoos for the seriously enthusiastic mermaid lovers amongst us

Mermaid Tattoos for the seriously enthusiastic mermaid lovers amongst us

The tattoo industry is a booming market, last year the industry generated a staggering $1.6 billion in revenue according to the market research firm IBISWorld and there is no sign of a downturn. In fact over the next decade the industry is looking at a growth rate of 7.7%. Today it is estimated that over a third of 25-29 year-olds have at least one tattoo with woman comprising of half of this figure. This boom is a result of a rise in professionally trained artists doing a more competent job also contributed by the increase in celebrity and media exposure.  Famous celebrities who openly show off their body art include Justin Bieber, Rhianna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga to name just a few! This boom has also seen an increase in the amount of diverse tattoos available to choose from which can make your own choice a stressful process as you want to ensure the one you ultimately pick reflects your own personality.  The choice of size, colour, meaning and placement are also other major factors to consider in this process. For those of us passionate about mermaids it is the perfect opportunity to bring the passion to life and show off your inner love. The mermaid symbol goes far beyond the Disney princess meaning some even say it can go as deep as the ocean itself.  Other meanings associated with this symbol include danger, sensuality, temptation all of which are steeped in history. With our own bodies made primarily of water it can also been a symbolism of people’s desire to swim in the vast oceans and get lost under the waves into an underwater world full of mystery, charm and intrigue releasing their inner sensuality and feminine beauty whilst showing the world they are not shy to bare their bodies. Mermaids are the admired descendants of Aphrodite and Venus, the goddesses of both love and beauty which is also an added attraction for choosing a mermaid inspired tattoo. There are many different mermaid inspired design ideas out there to choose from. They vary from the perceived pretty mermaid with long flowing hair and a beautiful mermaid tail sitting on a rock with the waves lashing around her to the portrayed Disney character of Ariel from the Little Mermaid.  Whatever your design you will be sure it reflects your nature and individuality. Beautiful examples of mermaid tattoos can be seen below: Mermaid Tail Tattoo Amazed by this wonder of symbolism associated with a mermaid tattoo…go on celebrate and embrace your inner and outer beauty.
