The New “The Little Mermaid” Film is coming to our screens!
There has been massive excitement recently with news that filming has now finished for the new “The Little Mermaid” Disney film, although the release date is set for May 26 2023 fans are already super excited and are counting down the days..months..years until it comes out in the cinema. All the team at Planet Mermaid cannot wait and have been debating as to which Planet Mermaid inspired tail would look the best on the gorgeously talented Halle Bailey who has been cast as Ariel little mermaid. Past castings has seen Ariel little mermaid in green and purple, similar to our very own Sea Star or Purple Surf collection Or will they completely change and maybe go for a Sunset Splash style? This tone would look amazing on Halle Bailey really showing off her amazing colour! What do you think Halle should wear; we would love to hear from you on our socials! Next let’s talk material; will it be an inexpensive silicone mermaid tail to go with a silicone monofin? Or will it be a custom silicone mermaid tail or something completely different such as a neoprene mermaid tail?! Planet Mermaid would also love to see Halle in its very own Magic Fin Monofin with three colours available to choose from. Halle would have no problem in choosing which one to go with her mermaid tail! The choices are just endless and we cannot wait to see what the end result will look like. It has not been plain sailing for Halle Bailey, who at only 19 was hit with criticism soon after she was announced by Disney that she would be Ariel in the live action production of the animated classic, “The Little Mermaid”. Twitter and other social media channels were inundated with an online petition #NotMyAriel which saw opinionated and cartoon purists complain that she did not look like the original version of princess Ariel mermaid who was white and a redhead in the 1989 version of the film. Halle however came back in true mermaid style commented: “"I just feel like this role was something bigger than me and greater. I feel like I'm dreaming and I'm just grateful and I don't pay attention to the negativity. It's going to be beautiful and I'm just so excited to be a part of it." Source: BBC Newsbeat Such inspiring words from such a young actress! Planet Mermaid applauds you for your courage, professionalism and ultimate girl power! Disney also hit back defending Halle by pointing out that the original “The Little Mermaid” story was created in 1837 by the famous Danish author Hans Christian Anderson, and that Danes come in many colours including, black and finishing the argument that “The Little Mermaid” is a cartoon, not a biopic and could cast her in any colour they wished! The upcoming film is full of other wonderful characters, including Sebastian played by Daveed Diggs, King Triton played by Javier Bardem, Flounder played by Jacob Tremblay, Ursula played by Melissa McCarthy, Prince Eric played by Jonah Hauer-King and Scuttle played by Awkwafina… Who is your favourite character in the film? The full casting line up looks simply phenomenal…..come on May 26 2023 we can’t wait!! Don’t forget to let us know which Planet Mermaid tail would look great on Halle! Happy Mermaiding
Planet Mermaid helps save the Whales and Dolphins!
Planet Mermaid is very proud to have one of its own mermaid team member’s sign up to the “Swim Serpentine” event to raise valuable funds for WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the leading global charity dedicated to the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises. The Swim Serpentine event is a one day open water swimming event held on Saturday 18th September at the beautiful Serpentine in Hyde Park, London, home of the Serpentine Swimming Club. Hyde Park swimming is open to everyone at the Serpentine Lido and is an amazing venue to do wild water swimming. Mermaid Ophelie who took no hesitation in signing up comments: “When I was given the opportunity to participate in this event, I said yes straight away without knowing too much about the details. I am always up for doing new and exciting things that challenge me and allow me to work towards a specific goal, all whilst raising money for a great cause. I had recently seen articles about an annual tradition in the Faroe Islands in Denmark where a festival involves the needless killing of hundreds of dolphins and whales, these images have continued to be my inspiration and motivation for doing the swim. Whales, dolphins and all sea creatures are a Mermaid's best friend and they need to be saved, they all deserve a chance to live. When I started training, I was barely able to swim 500m, and this was with lots of breaks! I can now swim 1600m with minimal breaks and longer sets, with each session I try and push myself to swim longer and further. I have loved swimming and being in the water, both in pools and outside in the fresh and most of the time very chilly water. My hair never looks nice, I always seem to have water in my ears and can’t get rid of the smell of chlorine, but it is completely worth it! I'm so excited for the event on the 18th September and can’t wait to swim alongside everyone else participating, I'm sure I won’t be the only mermaid there” Planet Mermaids founder Maggie goes on to say: “We at Planet Mermaid are super proud of Mermaid Ophelie for her endurance, strength and courage to improve her health and stamina whilst doing her part to help save whales, dolphins and porpoises; we are behind her at every stage of this exciting journey” Mermaid Ophelie is openwater swimming in her wetsuit and neoprene swim cap but has said if she raises enough for WDC she may think about using her mermaid tail or even enter other open water swim races in 2021! Mermaid Ophelie has been training extremely hard for this and if all goes well may look to do the North Channel Swim as her next challenge!! Ophelie has already smashed her £300 target which is simply amazing, lets help her get to her ultimate goal of £700, simply click on the link to go straight to her just giving page of you would like to donate to this worthy cause - https://bit.ly/3ySjHyb If Mermaid Ophelie has inspired you to try openwater swimming and you are thinking about where you can find “open water swimming near me” just google and locations will come up near you. Mermaid Ophelie chose to train at Box End, Kempston in Bedfordshire, near Planet Mermaids HQ. Planet Mermaid will be cheering Mermaid Ophelie on during her swim the 18th September so keep an eye on our social media for live updates! Go Mermaid Ophelie you truly are an inspiration and the whales, dolphins and porpoises will be so proud of you!

Want ideas for a more exciting way to exercise.....
When it comes to exercising, we’ve always opted for the traditional but, one could argue, slightly boring option of running, whether that be on the road, in the park or even on the treadmill. We’ve never given anything else much thought…well until now! Who’d have known there were so many different and exciting alternatives to keeping fit? Particularly mermaid swimming. Yes, you did hear that right. You can relive your childhood fantasies whilst getting fit at the same time! It has been proven that if you attend classes on a regular basis, and healthy eating is implemented, your body will start to become healthier and stronger. Not only that, but your posture will also change due to the body positioning in the pool and core work. Your overall cardio will also improve over the weeks and you’ll notice a change in your posterior muscles….always a bonus in our book. @kimkardashian, eat your heart out! ‘How does it work?’ I hear you ask. Well, the idea is that the movements are slow and graceful, making the swimming look effortless. The joined legs covered with the tail give the effect of no legs and, as the fin is covered and your feet are hidden, it gives the tail effect. This then encourages the swimmer to use a flutter kick known as a butterfly leg kick. The motion of the butterfly kick is a very different process once you’re a mermaid. The costume gives you full support to complete the swimming style and the Magic Fin enables a greater speed - together, they are the essence of mermaiding. Swimming with a Magic Fin helps with your overall body position and improves your technique in the water by creating extra buoyancy as you swim. Fin swimming is a new way of learning swimming techniques and co-ordination while improving your overall fitness. This excellent idea is the brainchild of Mermaid Wave Swim School who hold mermaid classes all around the country, run by experience mermaid swim instructors. All the kit is provided so no added expense is needed - all you need to do is turn up, have fun and transform into a mermaid. Given you an appetite to find out more? What's in your fin? Ours has Magic!
We thought we would tell you a little more about the 'Magic' in our Magic Fin. The one piece (monofin) designed and made in the UK with mermaid safety in mind is the first manufactured neoprene monofin in the UK. It really is a premium quality swimming aid. The specially designed socks are fantastic to help mermaids have a 'quick release' and are designed for foot sizes UK 11 up to UK 6. As opposed to other monofins available that have strap related fixings that tend to have no 'quick release' method in place we feel the Magic Fin ticks the safety aspect full force. Not only is it lightweight and flexible it has specially designed groves and raised features on its insert to provide a smooth unified movement for the swimmer. The Magic Fin has been through vigorous testing and we are satisfied that it is the leader in the field of neoprene covered fins in the UK. The socks are a great length that go above the ankles and support the swimmer with propulsion through the water. The Magic Fin insert is flexible, highly durable and virtually indestructible. Above all safer in waters as opposed to other neoprene product monofins that use materials such as perspex and poly-carbonate. These types of inserts (perspex and polycarbonate) are dangerous and can shatter on impact. Please be sure to avoid any monofin with this material. They are easy to spot - the insert tends to be see through or a thin sheet of plastic. As a reputable organisation we have gone to great lengths to provide our mermaids with a safe durable insert that provides a pleasant and fulfilling exercise that promotes fitness and well being. Our flexible insert can withstand great pressures and at the same time is so lightweight that it truly is a match made in heaven for a mermaid swimmer. We sell a large range of monofins and we have a great pride in knowing that our flagship Magic Fin is a superior neoprene fin on the UK market. Be sure to view our short video showing you how durable the Magic Fin is!
Magic Fin Monofin from Planet Mermaid
It's a wonderful day here at Mermaid HQ! We've launched our new Magic Fin monofin that we feel is totally awesome. We wanted to provide our mermaids with a fin that covers a wide age range and that is both comfortable and highly durable. The Magic Fin achieves that with the nifty sock inserts that fit foot sizes 11-6 (UK), 29-39 (EU), 11-8.5 (US). The Magic Fin fits Planet Mermaid tails and really gives an elegant shaped fin that creates that awe inspiring mermaid silhouette. The comfort of the fin is truly excellent and the enjoyment of being a mermaid and improving your dolphin kick is achievable with this fin that hides away inside your Planet Mermaid tail. Pictured swimmers with the Magic Fin, from ages 6 up to age 15. Want to join in with the fun and work on the dolphin technique? Just add a Planet Mermaid Tail for the total look :) Watch your mermaid splash with joy.... © Planet Mermaid 2016
How do you swim like a Mermaid?
Do you dream of being able to breathe underwater like a real life mermaid? Do you wish you had a tail like Ariel’s and could dive down into the deep blue sea? Well now you can – we’re going to show you how you can learn to swim just like a mermaid and make it look natural, like you belong in the water. You might have seen videos of real life mermaids who look so elegant gliding through the water. When you have legs like a mere human, it’s not that easy! So here are some steps to transform you from a water baby into a graceful mermaid: Learn the motions – so try swimming just with your body and arms, keeping your feet together. You can even try a flip if you like. Now try those swimming techniques with a Monofin or some Flippers on – this will feel a bit different as they will help you glide through the water. Now it’s time to add the Mermaid Tail ! Moving in these may feel strange at first as your feet will be bound together. When you know you can swim properly as a mermaid, it’s time to try and make it look pretty! Here’s a video explaining the steps, use it to get ideas for different mermaid movements you can try in the water. As you can see, it’s also a good idea to get friends to help you out!
